Nike designer Ryan Noon finds inspiration for his original creations in far-flung places—this time in Iceland. The Nike Pro Reykjavik Rave Printed Women’s Tights and Boyshorts feature a bold digital print of traditional Icelandic fisherman knit patterns with party tubes exploding from within for an unexpected, colorful contrast. These tights and boyshorts “are an expression of lava, ice, wind and rain in Reykjavik 101, the city center local,” Noon explains. “The colors are reminiscent of the wild natural elements of lava, ice and geysers.”

It all began with a traditional Norwegian sweater that Nike designer Ryan Noon found in a Helsinki thrift store back in 2005. “Norway has a strong tradition of folk dress and knitting,” says Noon, who has lived in Scandinavia off and on over the years. “This technique is kind of the signature of Norwegian folk dress.”

The sweater became Noon’s favorite, and eventually inspired him to design the new Nike Pro Oslo Glow Printed Women’s Tights and Boyshorts. Both styles feature a bold digital print drawing on traditional hand-embroidered elements of Scandinavian knit trims, mashing them up for a fresh and totally unexpected look. “The trompe l’oeil feel is humorous and fun and beautiful,” says the designer.

These head-turning styles were also designed to perform, with sweat-wicking fabric, a wide elastic waistband and reduced seams for comfort. Plus, the digital print lends a super-smooth feel (which can’t necessarily be said of the average thrift-store sweater).

Despite the pre-Halloween timing of the launch, Nike Designer Ryan Noon says his inspiration came not from the holiday but, rather, from the hard-working female athlete herself.  The print on the front features a normal-looking X-ray with bones intact, but the one on the back—made up of broken bones, screws and hip replacements—reveals the athlete’s inner toughness in the face of grueling workouts and adversity. Clearly, there’s more to her than meets the eye.

Besides turning heads, these tights feel especially smooth and soft as a result of the digital print. And, yes, you can even wear them on Halloween—if you’re lucky enough to score a pair before they sell out.
